In times of financial instabilty, political vibrations, just as the greeks pull out of crucial days of election won by conservative, pro-eurozone New Democratic Party - the National Tourism Organization begins an initiative to use social media to promote the virtues of a Greek vacation and to respond to “inaccuracies or speculations” that have prompted a downward trend in the local travel market. The shaky situation in Greece surely has affected its' incoming tourism, and from that understanding the Greek National Tourism Organisation has launched the True Greece campaign, "to shed light on Greece as a travel destination by providing a platform of official and reliable information. Through articles, official statements and real-life testimonials, you will see that Greece, undeniably, remains one of the greatest travel destinations in the world". The New York Times writes this week that the tourism body is inviting social media savvy, English-speaking supporters to join the campaign to highlight their positive experiences of Greece. The initiative, they write, coincides with advertising campaigns by travel companies promoting the cheap vacation opportunities in recession-hit Greece, particularly for visitors outside the euro zone. In the same context, Nicholas Kelaiditis, Director at Large of the Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourist Agencies, published this week a column on Travel Daily News, pointing out "Myths and Reality - the whole truth about Greece". Kelaiditis starts by pointing out that "From the begining of the economic crisis in Greece, we faced a negative publicity for our country. The majority of the articles and images from the press and the announcements of National Governments were exaggerated, misleading and didn’t present the everyday reality". He designates the myths of insecurity and rearding tghe eurozone, stating that "Greece is a civilized, stable, democratic, Eurozone country", and that "this is the best time to visit Greece". |
